Miami-based cruise line operator Carnival Corporation & plc (Carnival) Tuesday announced that its bunker saving ship, Carnival Vista, has been awarded an "ECO Notation" from Lloyd's Register (LR) - the first Carnival Cruise Line vessel to be given the notation.

"Achieving the ECO Notation clearly demonstrates Carnival Cruise Line's commitment to responsible environmental stewardship," said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

"Carnival Vista was designed to operate at the highest standards set by the international maritime industry, and everyone involved in creating and operating this exceptional ship can take great pride in their achievement."

The ship is said to use low sulfur fuel and exhaust gas scrubbers to reduce emissions and meet current regulations for nitrous oxide, sulfur oxide (SOx), and particulate emissions, and has a steam-turbine generator to recover excess steam from the exhaust gas boilers.

Carnival Vista is also said to be the first Carnival vessel to feature an Intelligent Power Management System, which is intended to optimise operational settings on the diesel engine in order to save fuel and reduce associated emissions.

Going forward, LR will run surveys and audits on the ship's operations periodically in order to ensure compliance with LR's ECO Rules.

In April, Carnival reported its bunker consumption for the three months ending February 29, 2016 rose 4 percent year-on-year, but overall bunker costs - excluding its costly hedging programme - fell 41 percent.
