Bilfinger SE (Bilfinger) Friday announced that Carl Büttner Shipmanagement GmbH (Carl Büttner Shipmanagement) is installing a Bilfinger flue gas cleaning system on board on the tanker Aurelia in order to enable compliance with tightening environmental regulations, including emission control areas (ECAs) and the International Maritime Organization's (IMO's) global 0.50 percent sulfur cap on bunkers, set to be implemented from 2020.

"Babcock Noell's business model is based on a turn-key approach. We reduce the number of cost-intensive interfaces for our customers as we do not only supply the components but also handle the full installation," said Andreas Breeger, head of maritime flue gas cleaning systems at Bilfinger subsidiary Babcock Noell GmbH (Babcock Noell), which produces the scrubber.

Babcock Noell's scrubber system supports both closed loop and open-loop processes, with Breeger noting that "in both cases, users benefit from low operating costs and high system availability."

"In addition, the innovative process water cleaning system meets the highest environmental protection standards," added Breeger.

Aurelia is said to be receiving a hybrid multi-stream scrubber - capable of operating in both open and closed-loop modes.

"We have found in Babcock Noel a competent partner for flue gas cleaning. What particularly impressed us was the proven and innovative process technology," said Lars Bremer, managing director of Carl Büttner Shipmanagement.

"A further reason for our decision is the swift amortisation. This reference project is a future-proof investment for us setting new standards in the shipping industry."

In June, the Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association (EGCSA) said that the marine scrubber industry has "ample scrubber capacity for 2020" and is ready to help shipping comply with the 0.50 percent global sulfur cap for bunkers.
