Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority (ABPA) has announced a plan to expand service offerings at Antigua's Deep Water Harbour (DWH), according to Antigua's The Daily Observer.

ABPS has been working with the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) on the plan which will see the port layout restructured and new services offered.

"I see great possibilities and that's what really excites me," said Fritz Pinnock, Executive Director, CMI.

In addition to cargo and cruise ship functionality, the proposed port will offer distribution, warehousing and fulfillment services as well as bunkering facilities.

"The water space in the average Caribbean island is 20 times the land space, yet we have not developed our maritime conscience and utilised the sea to its full economic potential," said Pinnock.

While it is not clear which grades of fuel will be available, commentators noted that the changes will likely mean additional competition for bunkering locations already operating in the Caribbean, such as nearby St Eustatius.

Last year, NuStar Energy LP said its profits at St Eustatius had been hard hit due to competition in the area.
