ABB Friday released a video featuring the Onboard DC Grid system that enables the Vision of the Fjords to switch to battery power upon reaching the Nærøyfjord, Norway.

"Our vision is to be greener in all our business areas, particularly on the Nærøyfjord," said Rolf Sandvik, CEO of The Fjords.

"We have felt ABB has been as eager as us to get this technology working, they have been more or less living on this ship until it was finished."

With the hybrid power system enabling the vessel to minimise its impact on the UNESCO-listed fjord, the Vision of the Fjords is employed on a route that serves both the local tourism industry and the local community by delivering mail to remote settlements.

"Battery technology is playing a growing role in the maritime industry, particularly in Norway where regulation will require all ferries to move away from fossil fuels," said ABB.

Owned by The Fjords, the vessel has been called "one of the most innovative ship designs ever seen on the Norwegian fjords."
