Lloyd's Register (LR) says the revolution in the global trade of liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be aided by the construction of two large carriers intended for navigation through the the enlarged Panama Canal.

The vessels in question are owned by Elcano, will be built to LR class, and with a 178,000 cubic metre capacity each they will the largest vessels of their kind to sail in the Canal.

Features such as Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) Mark III Flex storage tanks that reduce boil-off rates from 0.15 to 0.1 percent will make the vessels "among the most fuel-efficient and cleanest in the global fleet," according to LR.

The ships will be powered by low-speed, dual-fuel gas injection diesel engines and augmented by high pressure gas supply systems.

LR is providing consultancy service to Spanish owner Elcano but it did not disclose where the vessels will be built or when they will be put into service.

Lloyd's Register is heavily involved in the advancement of the LNG industry, and earlier this summer it teamed with Penn Oak Energy Corp to develop a "a one-stop-shop solution" to assist companies in raising capital for retrofitting their ships to use LNG bunkers.
