General Dynamics NASSCO has announced it has delivered the world's second liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered containership, the Perla Del Caribe, two months ahead of schedule

A two-ship contract signed with TOTE in 2012 saw the first LNG-powered container ship, the Isla Bella, also delivered to TOTE two months ahead of schedule in October 2015.

The 764-foot long Marlin Class containerships will be the largest dry cargo ships powered by LNG and will be among the cleanest cargo-carrying ships anywhere in the world, according to General Dynamics NASSCO.

"The Perla Del Caribe and the Isla Bella exemplify world-leading, innovative technologies being used to build ocean-going ships that are cost-effective, friendly to the environment and offer a competitive edge," said Kevin Graney, vice president and general manager at General Dynamics NASSCO.

"NASSCO shipbuilders are proud to have successfully built the world's very first LNG-powered containerships."

The Perla Del Caribe will be introduced to the trade next month, and is understood to be likely operating between Jacksonville, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The ship is one of twelve NASSCO has delivered since 2005, and the company says it currently has seven commercial ships scheduled for delivery between 2016 and 2017.

Last month Ship & Bunker reported that Perla Del Caribe had been bunkered with LNG for the first time.
