Cruise operator Carnival Corporation & plc (Carnival) yesterday announced it will be fitting exhaust scrubbers on 70 percent of its fleet as the group released its third quarter results for the three months to August 31, 2014 (Q3 2014).

"Our implementation of the air emissions technology is a sound investment in our company's future and more importantly it will benefit the environment for years to come," said Arnold Donald, Carnival's President and CEO.

Giving details of the proposed plan, Carnival's Q3 2014 statement said "the company expects the exhaust gas cleaning system or scrubber technology will be installed on approximately 70 percent of its fleet by 2016, thus enabling the company to meet the 2015 stricter air emissions standards as well as mitigate escalating fuel costs."

"The company anticipates the new regulations will result in higher fuel costs in 2015 of
approximately $0.10 per share with that increase expected to be reduced by half in 2016 and mostly offset in 2017 based on the system roll-out," the statement explains.

Carnival also said it had performed "significantly better than expected" in terms of its financial results for Q3 2014 and cited both reduced fuel consumption and lower per-tonne bunker prices in a list of key metrics explaining the success.

The details build on Carnival's announcement in March this year that it had been "completely pleased" with the results of scrubber tests on seven of its vessels.
