Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K Line) today announced that a new hybrid exhaust gas scrubber system has been approved by Panama, with testing said to have verified the system's effectiveness in reducing air pollutant emissions and compliance with international regulations

The news is noted to come almost a year after K Line, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Mitsubishi Kakoki Kaisha, Ltd. (MKK) began test operations of the hybrid SOx scrubber system onboard K Line's Panama-flagged large-scale car carrier Drive Green Highway.

"The Hybrid SOx Scrubber System is the first commercialised system in Japan to comply with the more stringent SOx emission regulations that took effect, starting with ECAs, in 2015," added K Line.

Unlike similar systems, K Line says the Hybrid SOx Scrubber System's core components can be contained in an ISO shipping container, enabling installation on an open deck, and making it easier to remove and transfer to another vessel.

"Going forward, K Line, MHI and MKK will continue to pursue diverse environmental protection initiatives, including the development of measures to prevent air pollution, in order to help curb increasingly heavy environmental loads on a global scale," said K Line.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, in addition to its scrubber installation, Drive Green Highway also integrates "advanced energy-efficient technologies," featuring design improvements to reduce the vessel's impact on the environment.
