Swedish ferry company Rederi AB Gotland (Gotland) says it has signed a contract with Guangzhou Shipyard International Limited (GSI) of China for a newbuild high-speed liquid natural gas (LNG) powered ferry with a 1,650 passenger capacity.

Gotland says that a great deal of work went into the design process to create the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly vessel possible.

Separate reports indicate the 200 metre long ferry will cost about SEK 1 billion ($135 million).

The latest order comes in addition to a sister vessel ordered by Gotland last year.

The two vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2017 and by 2018.

Earlier this month China Classification Society (CCS) said any impact that the recent fall in crude oil prices, and corresponding drop in bunker prices, will have on investment in LNG bunker technology will be "short term."
