KNUD E. HANSEN A/S (KNUD E. HANSEN) Monday said that DFDS' next generation Ro-Ro newbuildings "will raise the bar for what is considered environmental friendly."

As Ship & Bunker previously reported, DFDS has ordered two bunker-saving Ro-Ro newbuildings as part of its ongoing fleet renewal project intended to increase the company's operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

KNUD E. HANSEN says it has worked closely with DFDS and CSC Jinling Shipyard to refine and optimise the concept.

"EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) is a big challenge for RoRo vessels and there has been a strong focus on structural solutions and optimised hydrodynamic capabilities,"  explained KNUD E. HANSEN, noting that a preliminary model test was conducted during the contractual design to verify the vessel's speed and power performance.

The company notes that it will be working to develop the design into a Basic Design in the future.

In  April, Ship & Bunker reported that KNUD E. HANSEN had received the ShipPax Award for the "revolutionary" and efficient design of the Con-Ro vessel Atlantic Star at the Ferry Shipping Conference 2016, noting that the vessel boasts a 50 percent reduction in fuel consumption per TEU.
