Høglund Marine Automation (Høglund) Monday announced that it has signed a partnership agreement  with Plan B Energy Storage (PBES) for the development of hybrid and fully electric commercial marine vessels.

The partnership agreement is said to highlight an ongoing "green shift" within the commercial marine industry.

"The hybrid power system of today is smart, proven technology, designed for ease of integration and uninterrupted performance," said Brent Perry, CEO of PBES.

"With robust and secure management systems, PBES energy storage is ideally suited to support and optimise the automated systems Høglund Marine is currently supplying to the industry."

The PBES system is noted to have been designed to seamlessly integrate with all major original equipment manufacturer (OEM) propulsion systems.

"We are pleased to announce the partnership with PBES," said Børge Nogva, Høglund CEO.

"We see the future of shipping and believe it will be increasingly automation based. PBES' technology and commitment to safety and quality fit well with our own and help establish us as a leader in the automated systems of tomorrow."

In September, Ship & Bunker reported that the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) had approved PBES' battery system.
