AEC Maritime has declared that the recent adoption of its SOx scrubbers by eight ships represents a "vote of confidence" in the implementation of scrubbers in the future, Seatrade Maritime News reports.

"We see these new orders as a vote of confidence in our technology," said Marcel Clephas, Technical Director of AEC Maritime.

The orders all came this year, the report noted, after the January 1, 2015 introduction of tighter Emissions Control Area (ECA) rules limiting the sulfur content of marine fuel to 0.10 percent by weight.

AEC Maritime's first SOx scrubbing system was said to have been first featured on Scandlines' Schleswig-Holstein in January 2014.

Since then it has been approved and certified by Lloyd's Register and features on at least 10 ships.

The low back pressure scrubbers are able to operate in closed loop, open loop, or hybrid configurations, and it is understood the company is in the process of patenting its technology.

Earlier this month Ship & Bunker reported that oil and bunker industry expert Dr. Rudy Kassinger noted that scrubbing technology will be a necessity once a global 0.50 percent sulfur cap comes into force.
