The Isle of Man Ship Registry says it will offer incentives for ships using energy efficient designs starting April 1.

Qualifying vessels will receive 25 percent off the cost of a new Certificate of Registry or a 10 percent discount from annual registration fee for vessels that are already registered with the Isle of Man.

The registry will use International Maritime Organisation (IMO) energy efficiency standards as the basis for the "green ship" incentives.

"Shipping is a global industry and requires an international solution to the problem of air pollution caused by ships," said Dick Welsh, director of the Isle of Man Ship Registry.

"It is fair to say that the shipping industry is the first to tackle emissions on a global scale."

To qualify for the discount, ship owners must submit a copy of the International Energy Efficiency Certificate or pre-verification report to show that the ship's Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) reduction factor is higher than IMO requirements.

"The Isle of Man is proactive in pursuing green technologies and is establishing a reputation as a jurisdiction to which 'Clean Tech' businesses are choosing to relocate," Welsh said.

A number of ports worldwide, including Singapore and Long Beach, offer incentives to encourage ships to reduce their emissions.
