TUI Cruises GmbH (TUI Cruises) Monday announced that the keel has been laid for its latest high-technology and fuel efficient cruise ship, Mein Schiff 6, which is under construction at Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku Oy (Meyer Turku).

Meyer Turku says Mein Schiff 6 will feature a number of energy efficiency enhancements that exceed that of its sister ships Mein Schiff 3, Mein Schiff 4, and Mein Schiff 5.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, sea trials found that Mein Schiff 3 used about 30 percent less energy than other similar-sized cruise ships.

Mein Schiff 6 is also said to feature an advanced exhaust cleaning system, which utilises a scrubber and catalytic converter to reduce sulfur emissions by an estimated 99 percent and nitrogen oxide emissions by about 75 percent.

"It will now only take seven months until the ship is fully assembled from its grand blocks. This period in which the ship takes shape is then followed by further outfitting, commissioning and testing works," said Jan Meyer, CEO for Meyer Turku.

The ship is said to be slated for delivery to TUI Cruises this summer.

In February, Finnish company Valmet announced that it will supply exhaust gas scrubber systems (EGCS) for the two new cruise vessels, Mein Schiff 7 and Mein Schiff 8.
