The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) has announced in an emailed statement that next year it will have its "most ambitious programme ever" including participation in two International Maritime Organization (IMO) working groups relating to the fuel quality and availability next year.

One of these will be a correspondence group formed earlier this year by the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC).

The group will focus on developing draft guidance for assuring the quality of bunkers and reviewing the adequacy of current MARPOL Annex VI rules surrounding bunker quality.

“We’re deeply involved in developing new standards at IMO,” said Peter Hall, IBIA’s CEO.

The announcement comes as part of a wider schedule of 2015 events which IBIA says is its fullest to date.

“This is our most ambitious programme ever and builds on 25 years of experience,” added Hall.

“Our aim is to help improve standards across the marine fuels industry and support our members.”

IBIA Chairman Jens Maul Jorgensen recently wrote for Ship & Bunker that ship owners-operators have been unfairly treated by IMO and that more could be done to improve fuel quality transparency.
