Dubai-based logistics provider Agility says it has signed an agreement with Maersk Line to cut CO2 emissions by 15 percent per each container transported on Agility shipments by 2020.

The agreement is said to be part of Maersk Lines’s Carbon Pact Challenge, which is intended to reduce emissions and environmental impact of the carrier and its customers.

"Responsible companies are looking for innovative, commercially viable ways to reduce the impact of their business on the environment," said Cas Pouderoyen, Agility Senior Vice President for Global Ocean Freight.

"In Maersk, we have one of the most creative and committed partners in the shipping industry. Our Carbon Pact partnership with them will benefit Agility customers and the planet."

Agility explains that, under the agreement, the company will work with Maersk to cut emissions through the utilisation of more fuel efficient ships, the optimisation of shipping networks and routes, and investigation into the integration of CO2 emission indicators into the regular business information flow and procurement its ocean shipping, among other options.

Both Agility and Maersk are noted to be members of the Clean Cargo Working Group, an international coalition of logistics providers, ocean carriers, and retailers, working to improve marine container transport's environmental performance.

In January, Maersk Line announced that it had signed a Carbon Pact with petrochemical company Boroug, marking a commitment by both companies to reduce CO2 emissions of Boroug's ocean transportation with Maersk Line by 15 percent from 2016 to 2020.
