Electronics giant Siemens says its Drive Technologies Division will provide fuel-saving drive and power generation systems for the 17 containerships that Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) is building for the United Arab Shipping Co. (UASC).

The systems recover waste heat from the main engine's exhaust gas to produce extra electrical power, reducing both fuel use and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by as much as 12 percent.

The drive system is a shaft generator capable of automatically adapting to operate as a motor or generator to meet system requirements.

"Together with UASC we worked as partner to adopt and comply with the very complex technical specifications from UASC," said Stefan Kraus, head of marine and shipbuilding strategy for the Siemens Drive Technologies Division.

"Due to extraordinary reduction of fuel cost the total cost for container transportation will be reduced significantly.

"This fuel saving also results in lower CO2 emissions of the same amount."

UASC announced in May that it had received $190 million in financing for two of the new ships, which will be capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG).
