Sweden's SKF Blohm + Voss Industries says it has launched a new emissions monitoring system that can record all of a ship's emissions data and couple it with GPS signals, making seamless emissions auditing and verification possible.

The system, Turbulo BlueMon, promises to help ships comply with MARPOL regulations, as well as local rules like the Vessel General Permit 2013, which applies in US coastal waters.

The system stores information on which regulations are applicable in which area and uses vessel position information from the GPS link to verify compliance, providing a warning to bridge crew when the vessel is moving toward an area with specific regulatory requirements.

The data is stored for at least two years, allowing for later verification that the ship has remained in compliance with all relevant emission limits.

The system can also control bilge water discharge based on limits programmed by the crew.

Legal requirements for emissions monitoring have been the subject of debate in Europe over the past year, while some observers have said using monitoring systems can save money for ships in the long run.
