Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) Friday announced that United European Car Carriers (UECC), a joint venture between NYK and Wallenius Lines, has taken delivery of the world's first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled Pure Car and Truck Carrier from Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (Kawasaki).

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, the vessel, named TBN Auto Eco, is the first of two newbuild dual-fuel LNG car carriers with 1A Super Finnish/Swedish ice class slated to be delivered to UECC.

Further, the vessel's 3,800 car capacity is said to make it the largest car carrier designed for transiting the Baltic Sea, as well as other ice-prone areas.

"These vessels will be put into service in Europe, where strict sulphur emission regulations have been introduced," said NYK, noting that LNG does not emit any SOx or Particulate Matter, and offers significantly reduced NOx and CO2 emissions compared to HFO and MGO.

"Thus, these vessels will easily meet the emissions regulation," concluded the company.

Last year, UECC called LNG as a fuel a "win-win situation" when considered as a long-term solution.
