Evergreen Line says the fuel-saving features of its new L-type ships have allowed it to increase tonnage this year while keeping total fuel consumption at last year's level.

The "Greenship" concept behind the vessels reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, with the reduction in unit cost resulting in better competitiveness.

"It was in July 2012 that we took delivery of the first L-type vessel from Samsung Heavy Industries," said S.S. Lin, the company's first vice group chairman.

"Each of the newbuildings since has been delivered perfectly to schedule and has been performing very well.

"Because of this smooth implementation of our fleet renewal program, we can continue to provide quality service to our customers and enhance the competitiveness of our operating fleet within the global market."

The company recently christened the 25th of the L-type containerships, the 8,452-twenty-foot-equivalent unit (TEU) Ever Lucky.

Evergreen Group began its fleet renewal in 2010, eventually ordering 20 L-type vessels from Samsung Heavy Industries and another 10 from CSBC Corp. in Taiwan.

The final five ships are scheduled for delivery from CSBC by the third quarter of 2015.

The company plans to return 24 chartered vessels by the end of next year as it integrates the new ships into its fleet.

Evergreen has said it wants to reduce the cost of filling containers by 10 percent this year.
