Angus Campbell, Corporate Director Energy Projects at Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) says the company, through its cooperation with Babcock International Group plc (Babcock), is aiming to build a "significant position" within the liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering market.

As Ship & Bunker reported last week, BSM and Babcock will form a 50-50 joint venture, Babcock Schulte Energy (BSE), intended to provide support to the companies' future LNG projects, including a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker vessel project - a 7,500m³ gas supply vessel, set for delivery in September.

"We take our position as a marine solutions provider very seriously. We're a large organisation, we have support and depth, we have a global presence, and we feel that with the capability of Babcock International added to that, we have the technical and human capability to actually make a meaningful difference," said Campbell.

"We hope to move forward in a significant way. We were not talking about building one ship. We would like to build a significant position in this new sector. We would like to see multiple ships in many geographic locations serving this new fuelling requirement."

With the shipping industry being increasingly pushed toward finding solutions for environmental concerns, Campbell says LNG is one of the "most significant steps" the industry can take.

Campbell further suggests that, if LNG is whole-heartedly adopted by the industry, the fuel could help shipping reduce its carbon footprint by up to 25 percent.
