DNV GL Tuesday announced that three Offen Group subsidiaries, CPO Container, CPO Tanker, and CPO Bulker, will utilise DNV GL’s e-learning course "Energy Efficiency on Board" across their entire fleet, enabling users to identify potential energy savings for implementation on board.

"As a large modern shipping company, we are always interested in innovative concepts and are constantly working to further extend our high quality standards in all areas," said Dietmar Thiem, Technical Director at CPO Container.

"With the use of e-learning, we can achieve an increased awareness on board and are able to identify and implement further energy-saving strategies."

The e-learning course is intended to help users understand the measures that can be implemented with consideration for resistance, propulsion, main and auxiliary engines, and what benefit and impact the improved processes will have on vessel operations, as well as the potential savings.

The course's various modules cover practical and theoretical aspects of on-board operations, including trim and ballast optimisation, propeller and rudder efficiency, and methods for improved route planning.

DNV GL’s Maritime Academy is said to have developed a customised solution for the companies in collaboration with the Offen Group, ensuring the basic modules of the e-learning tool complemented business processes and software applications used on CPO vessels.

"Besides the technical background and understanding the concepts, good communication and teamwork are also vital for improved energy efficiency," said Thiem, adding: "we are pleased that both parts are included in the training and that our crew will be not only trained in an optimal manner but also required to function as a team."

Offen Group is noted to have a fleet of 67 container ships, 8 bulk carriers, and 26 tankers, and employ over 700 masters, senior engineers, and ship officers - all of whom are being trained with the e-learning tool.

Earlier this month, DNV GL announced that Oriental Jubilee, Unique Shipping Group's newest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier, became the first vessel to be awarded DNV GL's SCRUBBER READY notation.
