The European Commission (EC) has announced that European Union (EU) member states have approved an EC's proposal to invest €22.1 million ($24.18 million) from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Synergy call to support seven actions that will help develop sustainable and efficient transport and energy infrastructure, including a number that involve liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering.

"European transport still depends on oil for 94 percent of its energy needs. That is why the EU is investing in seven projects to speed up the deployment of alternative energy sources, with a special focus on electrification and multimodal transport," said EU Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc.

Among the approved actions, €600,000 ($656,430) has been approved to support the feasibility assessment of LNG bunkering in Malta, which would involve a LNG floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) and supporting pipeline connecting Malta and Italy.

€2.63 million ($2.88 million) has been approved for a study aimed at the development of a ship bunkering facility in Gothenburg, as well as a pilot deployment of a motorway of the sea link between a small scale LNG-to-container transhipment facility in Zeebrugge.

€4.482 million ($4.9 million) will go toward the development of a natural gas supply system on Cyrpus, which could support the possible development of a secondary LNG INTRAMED market utilising small-scale LNG bunkering vessels.

€1.048 million ($1.15 million) will be used to asses the feasibility of a small-scale LNG reloading terminal in the port of Gdańsk and LNG bunkering vessels.
