The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Sunday announced it was responding to prevent a potential bunker spill related to a partially submerged towing vessel on the Lower Mississippi River near Vidalia, Louisiana.

Watchstanders are said to have received a report at about 3 a.m. on Sunday that the vessel, known as Sonny J, was partially submerged near Vidalia, with approximately 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel onboard.

Members of the USCG Marine Safety Detachment Vicksburg arrived on scene at about 8 a.m. to assess the situation.

The vessel's fuel tank vents, which were above water, were plugged, and a containment boom and sorbent material was deployed around the vessel.

Light sheening was reported within the boomed area.

An investigation had been initiated into the cause of the incident.
