International laboratory testing company Intertek Group Plc (Intertek) says it has opened a new laboratory for testing petroleum and fuel oil in Harvey, Louisiana, on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The 8,000-square-foot facility replaces an older lab and provides 24/7 analytics and support for the growing cluster of companies involved in bunkering and other petroleum businesses.

"Intertek is committed to supporting the growing oil refining and bunkering operations occurring in the Gulf Coast region," said Billy McInnis, Intertek's senior director of petroleum analytical assessment and cargo inspection services in the U.S. East and Gulf Coast regions.

"With industry expansion being driven from an increased supply of shale oil and gas, Intertek is expanding our capabilities as well, to better help our clients maintain and grow quality control, reduce business risks, and meet regulatory compliance."

The lab, which conforms to ASTM, IP, ISO, and other industry standards, can provide quality control testing on feedstocks, refined products, and asphalt.

Intertek announced in October that it was expanding a global coordination centre for its "ShipCare" services in the UK.
