LNG Powered Shipping Tankers go Into Operation at Rotterdam, Basel
Monday April 15, 2013
Shell has put two liquefied natural gas (LNG) only powered inland shipping tankers into operation sailing between Rotterdam and Basel, saying that it is not just a first for Shell in the Netherlands, but also for the inland shipping industry.
While noting that LNG is a "significantly cleaner fuel than the traditional fuel oil or diesel," Shell said the tankers are the next step towards more sustainable inland shipping.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority said that it promotes the use of LNG in inland shipping and already provides a safe location for LNG bunkering.
More companies are expected to follow with LNG powered vessels in the coming years, the port authority added.
