Danish shipping company DFDS will install trim optimisation and performance monitoring technology on about 20 ships, according to GreenSteam, the company providing the systems.

"At GreenSteam we firmly believe that fuel efficiency can be improved by pioneering digital technologies, and help companies in their pursuit of cost efficiencies and a greener approach to business," said CEO Daniel J. Jacobsen.

DFDS chose the systems after testing and comparing various solutions for dynamic trim optimisation.

GreenSteam, a Danish firm that says its technologies can reduce fuel consumption by 4 to 5 percent, also recently won a $2 million investment from Castrol innoVentures to accelerate its growth and reach new markets.

DFDS has warned that it may have to shut down some routes as rules on sulfur emissions in European Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) drive up costs.
