Rotterdam To Reward Green LNG Tankers
The Port of Rotterdam says it will be the world's first port to reward ocean-going LNG tankers which possess the Green Award certificate, and will give those ships a 6 percent discount on port dues.
The award is given by the Green Award Foundation to ships and shipping companies who have been assessed to have improved environmental performance, safety, and quality aspects of their vessels and crew.
According to the press release, the Green Award Foundation started to certify LNG tankers last year "after many years of preparation," and there are 36 LNG tankers with a Green Award certificate in operation.
The Port says that in 2012 it spent over €2 million ($2.65 million) on "sustainable shipping" initiatives.
In October 2012 the Green Award Foundation announced it would join forces with the Environmental Ship Index (ESI), with the Foundation using ESI results as part of its evaluation and, in return, checking ship emissions as part of ESI's annual audit.
