Glencore Plc subsidiary OceanConnect Marine has opened an office in Voula, Athens, formalizing its lubricants activity in the process.

The global bunker trader and broker has also appointed Christos Katarachias as Marine Lubricants Trader.

"Although we have been supplying customers with marine lubricants for many years, we decided it now was the right time to formalize our lubricants activity and establish a dedicated business unit," said OceanConnect Marine's Chief Operating Officer, Ethan Ram.

"We think there is room in the lubes market for a service-oriented trader whom suppliers and customers alike can rely on to be a consistent, responsible, and stable counterparty. OceanConnect Marine is financially strong and we do not pledge our receivables to obtain funding, so our customers do not face the risk of double payment when they transact with us."

Katarachias was said to have more than six years of experience in sourcing and trading marine lubricants on a worldwide scale, having previously worked for Aegean Marine Petroleum and OW Bunker.

"It is a great pleasure and honour to be part of the OceanConnect Marine family and I look forward to compliment the services that the company already offers to its worldwide portfolio of customers," said Katarachias.

"Our dedicated Marine Lubricants Sourcing Center in Greece serves as the global hub for servicing all of OceanConnect Marine's worldwide marine lubricants inquiries. Our goal is to add significant value to the service that we already offer our bunker customers by offering a single source for marine lubricants products and post-purchase service."

Ram, meanwhile, said the new Lubricants Sourcing Center was "just the starting point" for its Athens office.

"Greece is one of the world's great shipping communities and it was an obvious location from which to launch our Lubricants Sourcing Center," he said.

"Of course, we already sell fuel to many members of the Greek shipping community, but we expect to increase this activity significantly as we expand our team in Greece. Lubricants is just the starting point."
