Finnlines has said that Emissions Control Area (ECA) sulfur rules have contributed to its decision to cancel its charter of passenger and RoRo freight vessel Finnsailor when its current deal comes to an end on January 1, 2105, Tradewinds reports.

Finnlines described Finnsailor's current route as "clearly unprofitable" after a review.

"Taking into account the predominant over-capacity and also the changes in environmental legislation," Finnlines said the charter would be cancelled.

The 22,900 gross tonnage RoPax ship is currently on charter from Finnlines Belgium but may be redeployed on a different route, with the end of the deal expected to "lead to changes in the register of ships and the operational area of the vessel," according to Finnlines.

Finnlines recently said it was ready to compete in the post-January ECA environment with its "young, energy-efficient fleet."
