WE Tech Solutions Oy (WE Tech) Tuesday announced that it will supply energy efficient permanent magnet shaft generator solutions to Stena Line's four newbuild RoPax ferries, a move We Tech says will enable "tonnes of fuel savings every day."

As Ship & Bunker reported in April, Stena Line signed a contract for delivery of the four new vessels - called the "world's most fuel efficient" ferries - to be delivered through 2019 and 2020 with an option for another four ships .

"With our solution the shaft generator, driven by the main engine, can produce all the needed electricity on-board without using any fuel to run the auxiliary generators when sailing," said Martin Andtfolk, Sales Manager of WE Tech.

"Our solution is also based on frequency drive technology which allows the main engine to run at variable speed while producing electricity on-board. This results in tonnes of fuel savings every day."

Andtfolk notes that the supply of We Tech's shaft generators to Stena's vessels is a "very significant" step for the company, which he says has produced the "most energy efficient shaft generator solution."

We Tech says its equipment delivery to the first of the four vessels is for January 2018.

In September, Ship & Bunker reported that Caterpillar Marine (Caterpillar) is set to supply power solutions to the four ferries.
