ABB to Supply Bunker Saving Tech to Innovative New OSVs

ABB Group (ABB) says it will supply "two of the most innovative vessels operating in the offshore oil and gas sector" with bunker saving power, propulsion, and energy storage solutions.

ABB says the two 90 m by 20 m, 36 person capacity vessels will feature ABB's Azipod D, a podded electric propulsion system, and its Onboard DC Grid, both working to boost the vessels' fuel efficiency.

"The solutions we are providing will make these ships incredibly flexible and efficient to operate," said Juha Koskela, Managing Director of ABB's BU Marine and Ports.

"The Azipod D, Onboard DC Grid and energy storage are cutting edge technologies which match the demanding conditions often experienced in the offshore sector."

The Onboard DC Grid, which is said to be capable of reducing fuel consumption by up to 27 percent, will allow the vessels' four ABB 3600kW generators to operate at variable and optimum speed.

ABB says the ships will be equipped with batteries to further optimise power use and cut energy consumption.

Because the two offshore vessels will require precision, ABB says that they will be equipped with two 4.2 megawatt Azipod D units that will provide "millimetre precision at open sea."

Further, a hybrid cooling system that utilises both sea water and internal air will provide a "substantial impact of the ships' fuel efficiency," says ABB.

Both ships will also be fitted with ABB's Remote Diagnostic Service, connecting the vessels to ABB's technical support centres where technicians can monitor ship performance.

The two offshore vessels, which are set to operate glabally, are said to have been designed by Norway-based Cefront Technology AS, and will be built by COSCO Shipyard Group Co., Ltd. (COSCO).

In December, ABB announced that it was set to provide "integral technology" to a "futuristic" hybrid desiel electric ferry concept, named Seasight by shipbuilder Brødrene Aa, set to operate in Western Norway.
