Neste Corporation (Neste) Friday said it is developing an "RMG-type" emissions control area (ECA) compliant bunker fuel, and was on track to launch the product at the end of 2017.

The new fuel will have "a significantly higher viscosity than the currently available products," it says.

"The new solvent deasphalting (SDA) unit to be commissioned at our Porvoo Refinery enables the launch of a new type of a product," explained Varpu Markkanen, Business Development Manager at Neste.

"As a result, we are able to produce a heavier product with a sulfur content of under 0.1 percent and highly competitive other properties compared with distillate-based products available in the market."

The new higher viscosity product currently in development by Neste will also be compatible with all bunkers previously developed by the company, says Neste.

Currently, Neste offers two marine fuels with a sulfur content of less than 0.1 percent - Neste MDO DMB and Neste RMB.

Also Friday, Neste said its fuels had helped ECA operator AS Tallink Grupp (Tallink) with an average 3 percent energy efficiency increase in its engines compared to HFO.
