Panama Canal Introduces GHG Calculator for Canal Vessel Traffic
Ships using the Panama Canal will be able to see how doing so might reduce their carbon footprint thanks to the launch of an emissions calculator by the Panama Canal Authority.
The emissions tool works out vessel greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) based the available technology covering most of the global fleet and includes a calculation of total emissions save when chosing the canal over other routes, according to maritime news provider Lloyd's List.
"The calculator will be housed within the Panama Canal's Green Connection Environmental Recognition Program and will advance the programme's work to promote emissions reductions by recognising vessels that comply with the highest environmental performance standards," the authority was quoted as saying.
GHG emissions from shipping is next big regulatory issue facing the shipping industry where the direction of travel is being debated at the International Maritime Organisation.
