About 700 gallons of of lubricating oil were spilled from the USS Dewey near the mouth of the Tijuana River, approximately 4 miles off the coast of Imperial Beach, California.

The spill, which occurred on October 4, is said to have resulted from a mechanical failure onboard the ship.

The leak is reported to have been stopped and hard oil booms were deployed to contain the pollution.

Helen Haase, Navy Region Southwest Environmental Public Affairs Officer, said the navy is coordinating remedial actions with local U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) officials.
