South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery (HHI-EMD) has completed type approval testing for its low-pressure ammonia engine, expanding its range of marine engines powered by the alternative fuel.

The HiMSEN H22CDF-GA completed its type approval test from October 27-29 at Korean Register's Green Ship Equipment Test & Certification Center in Gunsan, South Korea, it said in an announcement on Monday.

Representatives from seven classification societies attended the test, including Korean Register, ABS, Bureau Veritas, DNV, ClassNK, Lloyd's Register and RINA.

The low-pressure gas ammonia engine uses a low-pressure gaseous ammonia fuel supply system, simplifying the system compared with conventional high-pressure liquid ammonia engines.

The approval follows type approval tests for the H22CDF-LA in 2024 and H32CDF-LA in 2025, both of which use high-pressure liquid ammonia fuel supply systems.

HHI-EMD said it is the world's first engine manufacturer to offer both high-pressure liquid and low-pressure gaseous ammonia engine technologies.

The test was also the first time a HiMSEN engine type approval test was conducted at Korean Register's specialised facility.

HHI-EMD plans to continue working with Korean Register on testing and certification for ammonia and other alternative-fuel engines.
