Tasmania's Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding says a contract with an international builder is set to be signed during the first six months of 2018 for two dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel powered Spirit of Tasmania newbuilds, local media reports.

Hidding has said the project would be funded through TT-Lines' revenue, along with a once-off $20 million payment from the state government.

TT-Lines' is noted to have already committed $80 million to the ship replacement fund.

The vessels are set to be 30 percent bigger than the current ships, with 43 percent larger passenger capacity, and 39 percent larger freight capacity.
