Japan-based IINO Lines has deployed an LPG dual-fuel very large gas carrier (VLGC) under a long-term charter with Borouge International.

The vessel, Lumi Aurora, is the world's first VLGC to meet Ice Class IB standards, IINO Lines said in a statement on its website on Thursday.

It will transport LPG from North America to Borouge International's petrochemical plant in Porvoo, Finland, where sea ice can complicate winter navigation.

The vessel can operate in icy conditions with the assistance of icebreakers, helping maintain feedstock deliveries throughout the year.

LPG remains a niche marine fuel, with its use largely concentrated in the gas carrier segment.

Earlier this month, IINO Lines announced it secured a transitional loan from Mizuho Bank to finance the acquisition of the vessel.

It is the second VLGC in Borouge International's chartered fleet, following Oceanus Aurora, which has served the company's facilities in Finland and Sweden since 2023.
