SIBCON2026: CMA CGM, SLNG and MPA Explore Biomethane Bunkering in Singapore
French shipping company CMA CGM, Singapore LNG Corporation (SLNG) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have signed an MoU to explore the supply and use of liquefied biomethane as a marine fuel in Singapore.
The agreement will look at how existing gas infrastructure can be used to supply the fuel to ships, including how its GHG savings can be accounted for when mixed with natural gas, MPA said in a press release today.
The partnership was announced at the 24th Singapore International Bunkering Conference (SIBCON) event today.
The three parties will also conduct trials to test the proposed approaches under actual operating conditions and assess their potential for wider use.
The agreement brings together MPA's regulatory expertise, CMA CGM's shipping and logistics operations, and SLNG's LNG infrastructure and technical capabilities.
Biomethane is cleaner alternative to fossil LNG and can be used as a drop-in fuel in LNG fuelled ships.
CMA CGM operates a fleet of dual-fuel LNG container ships and has several more on order.
The agreement comes as Singapore continues to develop its LNG infrastructure.
Last week, SLNG announced that construction had begun on a third jetty at its Jurong Island terminal.
Expected to be completed in 2028, the jetty will support LNG bunkering operations.
