The IMO’s Research and Development Forum has examined how the growing use of alternative marine fuels could change pollution-response requirements.

Held on September 21-22 in Singapore, the forum brought together regulators, scientists, industry representatives and emergency responders to discuss preparedness for incidents involving newer marine fuels.

Hosted by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, with support from China, the event covered LNG, LPG, methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, biofuels and e-fuels.

Discussions focused on how the different properties of these fuels could affect spill behaviour and response strategies.

Participants also looked at spill modelling, risk assessment, emergency response, post-spill actions and international cooperation.

The forum included expert presentations, case studies, panel discussions and working sessions, allowing participants to share research and operational experience.

A key theme was the need for closer cooperation between governments, industry, academia and the scientific community to address knowledge gaps and improve preparedness before major incidents occur.

Participants also stressed the importance of using research findings, operational experience and international cooperation to develop response protocols for alternative fuels.

The forum was held alongside SpillAsia in Singapore, linking policy discussions with practical spill-response expertise and helping identify areas for future work.
