The Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) Wednesday announced that it has released rules for liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled coastal and inland vessels.

"In a significant move, which underscores the increasing importance of using cleaner fuels, these Rules will help the maritime stakeholders to promote environment friendly fuels for Coastal as well as Inland vessels," explained IRClass.

The class society says the rules for gas-fuelled vessels were developed based on a study of the various international requirements, including the European Standard laying down Technical Requirements for Inland Navigation Vessels (ESTRIN) and the International Maritime Organization's (IMO's) International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), as well as consultations with various stakeholders.
