Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia have tested their joint response to oil spills in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore ahead of Singapore’s 17th Joint Oil Spill Exercise (JOSE) 2026.

The exercise, led by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), simulated a vessel collision in Singapore waters, with the resulting oil spill reaching the shores of Indonesia and Malaysia, MPA said in a press release on Friday.

The drill tested information sharing, response planning and mutual assistance. Indonesia and Malaysia deployed response assets in their respective waters.

MPA also hosted representatives from government agencies, industry and international organisations at its Integrated Operations Hub Lab to showcase Singapore’s oil spill response capabilities.

The programme covered the use of MPA’s Maritime Digital Twin to predict oil movement, as well as artificial intelligence to support response planning and resource deployment.

Participants also explored the use of unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned surface vessels in spill response. Concepts trialled with ST Engineering included using aerial surveillance to guide surface vessels in spraying dispersants and towing oil containment booms.
