South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) today announced it will join forces with local shipyards, builders, and state institutes to develop a class of 180,000-tonne liquefied natural gas (LNG)-propelled ships - the largest such vessels in the world, South Korean media reports.

MOF, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, POSCO, Korea Gas Corporation, Korea Development Bank, Korea Shipowners' Association, LNG Bunkering Industrial Association, and a research institute are set to sign a agreement on Tuesday to start the pilot project.

"This pilot program is aimed at building the world's largest LNG-propelled ship, which is expected to pave the way for related industries to take root in the nation," said Kang Joon-suk, Vice Marine Minister.

"We will expand support for LNG-powered vessels to help benefit the nation's overall marine industry."

This latest project is part of a larger push in South Korea toward the development of LNG bunkering and use of LNG as marine fuel in the country.
