Hong Kong-headquartered Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has named its first 24,168 TEU container ship capable of running on methanol.

The dual-fuel methanol container ship, OOCL Wisdom, was named in a ceremony at the shipyard of Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co, the company said in a statement on its website on Friday.

It is the first of a series of seven dual-fuel methanol ships ordered by the firm.

“With a maximum capacity of 24,168 TEU, OOCL Wisdom is currently the world's largest methanol dual‑fuel container vessel,” OOCL said.

The vessel is capable of running on methanol and conventional marine fuels.

The container segment has led orders for methanol-fuelled newbuilds. With a growing number of methanol-powered boxships on order, ports will need to scale up the availability of green methanol quickly to meet the resulting surge in demand.

“The delivery of OOCL Wisdom not only expands OOCL's fleet and sets a new benchmark for our vessel technology, but also demonstrates our firm commitment to green and low carbon development, digital intelligence and sustainability,” Tao Weidong, CEO of OOCL, said.
