Hong Kong based Seaspan Corporation (Seaspan) [NYSE:SSW], on Monday announced it has exercised options for the construction of five fuel efficient containerships using the company's SAVER design.

With a capacity of 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the vessels will be constructed at he Chinese yards of Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding Co., Ltd..

The vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2015, and Seaspan says it expects to sign long-term time charters for the vessels with one of the liner majors in the near term.

The news follows orders earlier in the year for similar SAVER design vessels.

In April 2011 Seaspan was nominated for the Nor-Shipping Next Generation Ship Award for the design of its SAVER 10000 ship, according to the company's website.

At the time, DNV called them the "World's most efficient container vessels."
