Maersk Tankers' ammonia retrofit project was among the several projects selected for EU Innovation Fund support on Monday.

The RIPPLE project aims to equip four very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) with two-stroke dual-fuel engines capable of running on ammonia, according to the European Commission's project description published on Monday.

The project is expected to avoid more than 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions over ten years.

The European Commission selected 77 projects for €3.4 billion ($3.8 billion) in funding under the latest round.

The selected projects have been invited to begin grant agreement preparations with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).

The agreements will finalise funding amounts, budgets, timelines, technical and financial deliverables, and legal responsibilities. The Commission expects to announce the results of this process in the first quarter of 2027.

Maersk Tankers has 10 VLACs joining its fleet and sees potential to support the wider adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel.

“Moving ahead with the retrofits will depend on securing commercial commitments from customers,” the company said in a LinkedIn post yesterday.
