Hartlepool-based Oil NRG has launched a new bunker operation, Propeller Fuels, supplying marine fuels around the UK, partner Robert Thompson has told Ship & Bunker.

"Oil NRG was incorporated in 2007 and is now run by Managing Director Roger Peart, ex-owner of third generation bulk fuel distributor F Peart & Co., which the Peart family established in 1930 and ran for 80 years prior to selling in 2010," Thompson explained.

"The core original supply area is near to the busy ports and shipping areas of Tyneside and Teeside. Utilising the three additional group owned terminals however, which span the entire eastern region of the UK, they have the ability to respond to enquiries up and down the entire UK east coast as well as Scotland. Propeller Fuels will utilise the in-house resources and supply scope enabling the same wide supply scope from the outset."

Thompson, who provides oversight for the operation, has been in the industry for over 20 years having previously held senior roles at companies including Tramp Oil and Marine and Cockett Marine Oil.

"The large in-house terminal & RTW distribution capacity owned by Oil NRG, coupled with extensive product supply sources and backed by a sound balance sheet is extremely impressive and makes it a compelling partner. When the Oil NRG resources are added to the experience and knowledge of the partners, it creates a perfect marriage to be able to offer specialised, professional and competitive gasoil deliveries in the UK," said Thompson.

2020

Key to the timing of Propeller Fuels' entrance into the market are the upcoming IMO 2020 regulations that will see the global bunker cap on marine fuel falling to 0.50% in just over 2 years' time.

"Key to our plans today are to establish a bunker supply platform that is ready for 2020. Propeller management have a sharp eye on the impending changes in the global Marine Fuels environment that the new regulations will bring, and intend to be in position to respond to any increase or change in demand patterns this will inevitably create. This is particularly with respect to the expected increase in demand for distillate fuels," Thompson told Ship & Bunker.

"The Propeller Fuels service is Marpol compliant and ingrained in the commercial and operational team is the genuine understanding of the demands and challenges of the Shipping and Marine customer base. Propeller believe this will prove to be a significant differentiator over time."

Oil NRG is an independently run fuel supply and fuel distribution business with depots on Tyneside, Teesside, the Vale of York, and most recently in East Anglia.

Its fleet of 36 vehicles are manned by an in-house team and includes articulated tankers, urban artic, 6 and 4 wheel rigids, mini tankers, a site 4x4 tanker, and Adblue trailer.

Oil NRG managing director Roger Peart said: "Having started my career in bunkering, and with my father David Peart being ex-Chairman of The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), the launch of Propeller Fuels is a very exciting prospect, and I am confident that Robert and his team will fulfil the establishment of a dedicated, professional and physical marine fuels supplier."
