Equisera and VertomCory are exploring the production of bio-methanol from UK waste for use as a marine fuel, starting with coastal shipping routes.
The companies aim to develop a domestic supply chain for lower-carbon marine fuel, using waste materials to produce bio-methanol in the UK, Equisera said in an announcement on Monday.
Equisera’s RiPR technology converts wet biogenic waste into gases including hydrogen, biomethane and carbon dioxide, which can be used to produce bio-methanol.
VertomCory will bring its maritime and logistics expertise to the project, helping assess how the fuel could be supplied to ships operating on regular UK routes.
The companies see coastal shipping as a practical starting point, with regular schedules and a limited number of port calls making it easier to develop fuel supply and bunkering infrastructure.
“Our collaboration with Equisera reflects VertomCory’s determination to turn the ambition of maritime decarbonisation into practical, commercially scalable action,” Peter Wilson, group CEO of VertomCory, said.
