CMA CGM and ENGIE Plan Biomethane Plant in Le Havre
French shipping company CMA CGM and energy company ENGIE have signed a framework agreement to develop a biomethane production facility in Le Havre, France.
The facility is expected to supply 7,000 mt/year of biomethane to CMA CGM’s fleet from 2029, CMA CGM said in an announcement on Tuesday.
ENGIE will lead the project’s development, while CMA CGM will invest as a minority shareholder through its energy fund, PULSE.
The project remains subject to a final investment decision.
The plant will convert livestock waste, household biowaste and agricultural residues into biomethane. It is also expected to produce 100,000 tonnes of digestate for use as fertiliser and recover 13,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 for commercialisation.
Biomethane can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by at least 67% compared with conventional marine fuels.
It can be used to power CMA CGM’s LNG-fuelled fleet.
CMA CGM aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across its activities by 2050.
