PowerCell Wins Fuel Cell Order for Norwegian Hydrogen-Fuelled Ships
PowerCell Group has secured a contract worth approximately SEK 50 million ($5.2 million) to supply fuel cell systems for two hydrogen-fuelled cargo ships being built for Norwegian company LH2 Shipping.
The order covers 4 MW of installed power based on PowerCell's Marine System 225 platform, with deliveries scheduled for completion by 2028, the firm said in a statement on its website on Thursday.
The companies also plan to establish a long-term service agreement covering the vessels' operational lifetime.
The ships are designed for shortsea operations in the North Sea.
The system has already received type approval from Lloyd's Register and RINA, while PowerCell said it also intends to complete DNV type approval as part of the project.
LH2 Shipping recently secured funding from state agency Enova to develop two hydrogen-fuelled vessels.
"This project demonstrates how fuel cells are increasingly being considered for larger and more demanding maritime applications,” Stig Kallestad, Commercial Director at PowerCell, said.
